Culture: Prefer well-drained, fertile soil, high in organic matter with a pH 6.0 to 6.8.Consistent moisture is needed to prevent blossom end rot, but tomatoes do not tolerate waterlogged soils.
Planting: Unlike most plants, tomatoes do better if planted deeper than they were grown in containers. Set them in the ground so that the soil level is just below the lowest leaves. Roots will form along the buried stem, establishing a stronger root system. Tomatoes require support. Stake or cage plants. If staking, prune to two vigorous stems and remove suckers when they are 2-3"long. Loosely tie to the stake, to allow the stem to expand, in 1 foot intervals. Staked and pruned plants may grow to over 6 feet tall.
